The Challenge

We’ve challenged three interior designers to unleash their creativity by incorporating the R2 Platform furniture collection into a fresh and inspiring bathroom design. Available in both floor-standing and wall-mounted styles, Platform blends elegance with practicality, offering a choice of handle finishes, ceramic or countertop basins, and open storage configurations for flexible, personalised layouts.

Designers are tasked with showcasing innovative uses of the Platform range, experimenting with layouts, materials, and colour schemes to enhance both style and usability.

Design requirements:

  • A complete bathroom concept, including furniture, WC, shower, bath (or both)

  • Thoughtful integration of basins, mirrors, brassware, storage, accessories, lighting, and functional features

  • A £1,000 budget for tiles, décor, paint, and additional materials

What is the biggest challenge when designing a bathroom?

“Once you've plumbed things in they’re there for a good few years, hopefully. So you've got to create something that's got longevity that you know you'll love for a long time to come, but you don't want it to feel too plain and boring. It’s difficult to get that mix of things that will last but also look good."

A Room As A Reflection Of Yourself

Interior Design Challenge Sheree 13879 9110

Freshness and warmth

As a starting point, Sheree looked for a reflection of herself "The starting point for this bathroom was the wonderful wallpaper you see behind me. My heritage is Scandinavian and Caribbean, and that wallpaper is a traditional Scandinavian design, but with the colours of the Caribbean. I wanted something that had the freshness of Scandi design but with a bit of warmth."

Bringing in such a bold scheme to a traditionally 'safe' room is exactly the kind of statement Sheree wanted to start with "I wanted something that felt classic with a little bit of a twist. I love the design of the fluted Platform unit. It's classic, but it has an interesting texture, so I wanted to mirror that around the room with the panelling. Also, I'm a sucker for chrome. Chrome fixtures are classic and they go with everything, so I’ve used gorgeous chrome fixtures throughout."

Practical And Stylish

The need for storage was front of mind when Sheree chose "You need so much storage in a bathroom. I like the wall-hung units because they give the illusion of space. If you’ve got lots of things on your floor the bathroom can feel cramped, but wall-hung storage keeps it clean, spacious and practical."

Beyond the practicality, Sheree particularly highlighted the flexibility of the Platform range "It's great because you can pick and mix. I chose a fluted unit and then selected a worktop. For fixtures and fittings, I wanted really classic, durable things, so I went with a marble-effect worktop that will last forever. If you redecorate the bathroom in the future, it will still go with everything."

Helpful Tips For A Bathroom Redesign

Sheree's design expertise extends beyond just the aesthetic. She's constantly looking for ways to improve space, maximise storage and create a welcoming, homely space "With a small bathroom like this, I definitely think having things that hang on the wall helps it look bigger, because you’ve got floor space underneath. Light, bright colours help too, and of course, lots of storage. If you put away all the clutter, the room instantly feels much bigger."

Sheree's other tips;

  • Go for wall-hung items to give yourself floor space, which makes the room feel bigger, cleaner and more streamlined
  • Don’t forget storage – get a vanity with built-in storage so you can hide away your toothbrush and other bits
  • Go for things that won’t date, that you’ll still like in 5 or 10 years. Realistically you’re not going to redo your bathroom every couple of years, so try to future-proof.

I love the design of the fluted Platform unit. It's classic, but it has an interesting texture.
